We all have the tendency to sleep through things, yet, with the coming of a child, there is a new being who awakens us and keeps us awake with means that are not ours, a being who operates in a way different from our way and who appears every morning as if to say,
‘Look, there is another life, you can live better than you do’

Maria MontessoriThe Child in the Family

Among AMI's most important tasks are first of all, to maintain the vitality of the method and to contribute on a continuing basis, now and in the future, to the growing universal awareness of the needs of the child, thereby actively participating in the development of highly conscious responsible men and women.

Renilde MontessoriOn AMI’s 50th anniversary in 1979

It is true that Maria Montessori gained her world fame as a pedagogue. Nevertheless, that does not explain why her initiative, based on the observation of the behaviour of small children from working classes, has started a movement so vital that it has survived two world wars, the persecution of totalitarian regimes and the sharp criticism of the academic world. Nonetheless, this movement spread over all continents, forming stable roots among people of different languages, cultures and religions.

Mario Montessori JrOriginally published in AMI Communications, 1993/2-3

Our principal concern must be to educate humanity - the human beings of all nations - in order to guide it toward seeking common goals. We must turn back and make the child our principal concern. The efforts of science must be concentrated on him, because he is the source of and the key to the riddles of humanity.
